The Detroit Tigers have an off day on Friday, July 3, but not for the reason you might expect.
The Tigers are in the midst of a three-game series with the Texas Rangers in a span of four days from Thursday, July 2, through Sunday, July 5. The Tigers will be playing on the July 4 holiday like every other MLB team, but will have a mid-series break on July 3 to avoid World Cup traffic.
AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas – a less-than 10-minute walk from the Rangers’ home at Globe Life Field – will host a Round of 32 World Cup game between Australia and Egypt on Friday at 2 p.m. ET. Instead of trying to work around the World Cup game, however, the Rangers opted to have an off day scheduled.
This is the second time in the past month the Rangers have taken an irregular off day to make way for the World Cup, with Texas taking an off day in the middle of a three-game series against the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday, June 17, before finishing the series the following day. That off day was scheduled to make room for a group stage match between England and Croatia.
So if you’re wondering why the Tigers aren’t playing on Friday, you can blame soccer.
