A 20-year-old suspect, arrested in connection with the murder of African National Congress Councillor in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, Sicelo Mleve, has briefly appeared in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape.
Mleve was gunned down in his Ward 27 constituency office in Zwide during the voter registration weekend.
Police say the suspect, Lufunolwethu Nyodi, was arrested at his home in Kwazakhele on Thursday and face charges of murder, armed robbery and the unlawful possession of a firearm.
The case has been postponed to the 10th of July for formal bail application.
The Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General, Vuyisile Ncata, says while the motive is not yet clear, more arrests are imminent.
“The whole country will recall that on the 20th of June, it was the day one of the two days for the voter registration. Ward 27 Councillor in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality was in his office together with his colleagues when two men stomped into the office and robbed them of their cell phones, but they were there directly for him and then one of them fired shots and that killed him. And as the police, we did open a case, we were there. I was also there in the crime scene, and we conducted an investigation that led to the arrest of one suspect for now. Today, we were here because the suspect whose name is Lufunolwethu Nyodi, a 20-years-old boy from KwaZakhele appeared today, and of course, as the police, because we take this case very seriously,” says Ncata.
