The community of Jumpers informal settlement in Cleveland, Johannesburg, say they’ve lost confidence in the ability of the police in the area to curb crime.
Last month, 13 people were shot and killed after a group of gunmen travelling in a minibus taxi opened fire, wounding 14 others.
Three Lesotho nationals were arrested and appeared in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Thursday morning, where their case was postponed to next week for a formal bail application.
One of the residents, Thobile Ngcobo, says crime is rife in the informal settlement.
“Government must help us by improving Cleveland Police Station, it does not deliver. We are asking the government to allow us to protest and table our demands to all the people who are working at the Cleveland police station to hire new people.”
