The Houston Texans entered last season with Super Bowl aspirations, only to see those hopes end in disappointing fashion during the playoffs. For many teams, that kind of finish would lead to lower expectations heading into the following season.
Not in Houston.
In ESPN’s annual list of bold predictions for the 2026 NFL season, analyst Ben Solak made one of the biggest projections of them all: the Texans will represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. It’s a prediction that speaks volumes about how highly many around the league still view quarterback C.J. Stroud despite Houston falling short of its ultimate goal last season.
ESPN still believes in C.J. Stroud
Stroud’s second NFL season didn’t end the way Texans fans envisioned. Houston once again reached the postseason but failed to capitalize, leaving plenty of questions entering the offseason about whether the franchise was truly ready to compete with AFC heavyweights like the Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills.
ESPN, however, isn’t backing away. Instead, Solak predicts the Texans will take the next step in 2026, citing Stroud’s continued development and Houston’s improved roster as reasons the team could emerge from the NFL’s deepest conference.
It’s an enormous vote of confidence for a quarterback who has already proven he belongs among the league’s rising stars.
Texans have quietly built one of the AFC’s deepest rosters
Houston’s optimism extends well beyond Stroud. Over the past two seasons, general manager Nick Caserio has aggressively built one of the NFL’s most balanced rosters. The Texans feature young playmakers on offense, an improving offensive line and a defense capable of creating game-changing plays.
That combination has many believing Houston is positioned to contend for years rather than simply making occasional playoff appearances. ESPN’s prediction reflects that growing confidence. Instead of viewing the Texans as an up-and-coming team, the projection places them among the AFC’s true elite.

The AFC won’t make it easy
Of course, reaching the Super Bowl is much easier on paper than it is on the field. The AFC remains loaded with championship contenders. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs are always in the conversation. The Ravens continue to feature one of football’s most complete rosters behind Lamar Jackson.
The Bills remain dangerous with Josh Allen, while Joe Burrow and the Bengals are expected to bounce back. Even teams like the Broncos and Chargers appear capable of making deep playoff runs. Simply winning the conference may be the toughest challenge in football.
That’s what makes ESPN’s prediction so bold.
Everything comes back to Stroud
For Houston to reach the Super Bowl, Stroud will almost certainly need to take another leap. The former No. 2 overall pick has already shown the poise, accuracy and leadership that made him one of the league’s brightest young quarterbacks.
Now comes the next challenge. Can he consistently outperform the NFL’s biggest stars when the games matter most? The Texans believe the answer is yes. ESPN apparently agrees.
Whether Houston ultimately reaches the Super Bowl remains to be seen, but one thing is becoming increasingly clear: expectations around Stroud continue to rise. The playoff disappointment from last season hasn’t changed how many people view the Texans’ future.
If anything, it has only strengthened the belief that Houston’s championship window is just beginning to open.
