Police remain on high alert as the nationwide protests against undocumented foreign nationals are expected to continue, following Tuesday’s widespread disruptions.
Civil society groups have vowed to maintain intense pressure on the government until all immigration concerns are addressed.
Deputy National Commissioner for Policing, Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili, says while these sorts of situations can be quite unpredictable, law enforcement is prepared for any eventuality.
“Today is an unpredictable terrain; hence, we have put measures and plans in place. We policed before 6:00 last night, where we took our stock. We have policed close to 130 marches, 101 of those were peaceful. So, I must thank the South Africans for the engagement that we have, the communication that went out, the call for calmness that we have requested; they have respected.”
