Manchester City star Erling Haaland is playing in his first World Cup and helped Norway easily reach the knockout rounds for the first time since 1998.
But when it comes to Haaland’s jersey, the star striker is sporting a different name than what Premier League fans are used to seeing from the Norwegian.
While the back on Haaland’s jersey at Manchester City just has the name “Haaland,” his national team shirt displays “Braut Haaland.”
There’s a reason for that. Haaland has wanted to honor both of his parents at this historic World Cup.
Haaland is his father’s last name. Braut is his mother’s maiden name. Erling’s mother, Gry Marita Braut, competed for Norway as a heptathlon champion. So, displaying her name with the national team has extra significance to both Erling and Norway.
