LeBron James isn’t going to play for the Los Angeles Lakers during the 2026-27 NBA season.
Where will he go? That much is less certain.
Teams like the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat are expected to be involved.
Free agency does open in the NBA on Tuesday, June 30 at 6 p.m. ET.
The implication, though, is that James won’t be in a rush.

How long will it take LeBron to make a decision?
There’s no official timeline on this, but it sounds like it won’t be immediately.
ESPN’s Ramona Shelbourne wrote on X that there will be “no rush” for LeBron on this:
LeBron James and/or his representatives will talk to a few teams after free agency opens in a few hours. A source close to the process says there’s “no rush” for him to make a decision.

NBA free agency can often feel fast and furious once that start time arrives.
So even if James is in “no rush,” that could always just mean a day or two.
Or, if he wants, LeBron could dominate the headlines for the next couple of weeks.
At this point, he’s earned the right to go at his own pace.
