The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) has called for a lawful, humane and sustainable national response to migration issues in the country.
Faith leaders held an emergency meeting at Gatesville Mosque in Cape Town ahead of protests on Tuesday against undocumented foreign nationals.
MJC’s spokesperson Faizal Sayed says the concerns of South Africans regarding border management and unlawful immigration cannot justify hostility against migrants.
Sayed says, “These concerns cannot be dismissed or ignored. Equally, however, such concerns cannot serve as a legal or moral justification for hostility, intimidation, discrimination or collective punishment directed at any individual or community. South Africa’s constitutional order is founded upon the inseparable principles of legality, human dignity, equality and accountability.”
