Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and his co-accused are due back in the Johannesburg High Court this Tuesday morning for accused number one, Musa Kekana, and his legal representative to confirm that all administrative issues are in order.
Kekana’s new attorney told the court at a previous appearance that his client had not yet paid his full legal fees and that he may be unable to represent him at trial if the outstanding fees are not settled.
Matlala, his wife Tsakani, and three others are facing charges of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit murder and money laundering. The charges relate to the botched assassination attempts of Matlala’s former partner, Tebogo Thobejane in 2023, businessman Joe Sibanyoni in 2022, and music producer Seunkie Mokubung in 2024.
During the previous court appearance, presiding Judge William Karam expressed dissatisfaction with the delays, warning that any further postponements would constitute an injustice and prejudice to the other accused. Karam said he was hoping the administrative issues would be resolved by today, as promised.
The trial is expected to begin on 20 July.
