Many communities in Soweto have vowed to continue with their protests beyond the June 30th deadline set by anti-undocumented migrant groups.
That’s if government does not fast-track the deportation and repatriation of undocumented migrants in the country.
Communities under the banner of the March and March campaign took to the streets calling for undocumented migrants to leave the country.
The day started as usual with people boarding taxis at the Bara/City Taxi rank in Soweto to their places of employment and other destinations.
However, there are varying sentiments in Soweto regarding the issue of undocumented immigrants.
“I am against the deportation of undocumented immigrants. If they leave, we are going to suffer a lot. There will be no food,”
Hundreds of marchers gathered at Thokoza Park in Rockville to hand over a memorandum of grievances at the Civic Centre in Jabulani.
“We request monthly reports from SAPS and Border Management. Also, we demand the government to increase security against human trafficking. We demand an audit of undocumented foreign nationals in South Africa. Also, we demand that those foreigners who are arrested in the country be deported back so that they will serve sentences in their own countries,” says Musa Hlongwa, anti-undocumented immigrant activist.
Marchers are also demanding that those who employ undocumented foreign nationals be arrested.
