The South African Revenue Service (SARS) says it has strengthened resources ahead of tax filing season to boost compliance.
SARS is expanding digital services, including a new WhatsApp channel, to help taxpayers access assessments and avoid long queues.
It says refunds could be issued within 72 hours, as voluntary compliance continues to rise nationally.
SARS Commissioner Ngobani Johnstone Makhubu says, “And as far as the filing season is concerned, I think what is important for us is to be able to ensure that the six million taxpayers that we are going to auto-assess starting from the 1st of July, that those taxpayers are able to check their status on our SARS online credit system. You can be able to go there and check your status, whether you are auto-assessed or not, between the 1st and the 12th. of July.”
“And we want to make sure that those taxpayers don’t panic to come to our offices, that they wait until the end of the 12th of July so that they are able to receive correspondence from us,” adds Makhubu.
