LeBron James is reportedly being pursued by a West Coast rival of the Los Angeles Lakers, and a former teammate on the Purple and Gold could join him there.
As reported by ESPN NBA insider Shams Charania, James could end up on the Golden State Warriors alongside Stephen Curry and Draymond Green — and Anthony Davis could join them.
The move seems more likely after Green turned down his $27.6 million player option, a move that could free up enough cap space to allow the Warriors to try to sign James and trade for Davis.
ESPN’s Anthony Slater broke down Charania’s scoop, noting that Green’s decision “is a blaring indication that the franchise has something brewing and signals a shift in his and the franchise’s belief in what they can possibly pull off this summer.”
Is LeBron James going to leave the Lakers?
So far, we’re not even sure if James will play another NBA season, which would be his 24th, yet another record in a long list of them for King James.
That said, Charania has previously reported that “all indications” are James will indeed be back for another year.
Will that be with the Lakers, though?
It’s very possible that it won’t be.
As Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report detailed earlier this month, the Lakers are more concerned with Luka Doncic, who’s now the face of the franchise, and have spent big money re-signing Austin Reaves, the team’s No. 2 scorer last season.
“Building properly long-term around Dončić is the priority,” Pincus said. “The Lakers have high hopes to take a step forward this summer, and that’s without James. If their plans fail, that could lead to one more season with the future Hall of Famer.”
While this is hardly predictive on its own, it’s worth noting that James has stepped back from his “The Shop” show, handing off the reins to Travis Bennett and Steelo Brim.
While the show has been produced at barbershops all over the country, it seems Bennett and Brim’s version will be based in LA — even if James may not be.
