The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) says it is on high alert ahead of planned marches and gatherings against undocumented migrants in Soweto on Monday.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla says no formal applications were received for the demonstrations, making them spontaneous gatherings under the law.
He says law enforcement officers will be deployed to monitor the situation, maintain public order and manage expected traffic disruptions.
Fihla has urged motorists to avoid routes around Zondi and the Jabulani Amphitheatre, where delays and possible road closures are expected.
Fihla says, “Lawlessness, vandalism or illegal barricading of public roads will not be tolerated. Those taking part are urged to conduct themselves peacefully and within the framework of the law. To motorists, please anticipate delays, heavy law enforcement presence and the potential localised diversions around Zondi, Jabalani and surrounding arterial routes tomorrow morning. If possible, please plan your trips early or utilise alternative routes to avoid frustration.”
