Suspended Deputy Head of Crime Intelligence Major-General Feroz Khan is said to be in a critical condition at the Netcare Milpark Hospital after an apparent targeted shooting in Houghton on Sunday night.
Preliminary reports indicate that Khan was ambushed by two gunmen, believed to be travelling in a white getaway vehicle.
The shooting comes ahead of his scheduled appearance at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry on Wednesday.
Khan has been implicated in high-profile cases of corruption, illicit precious metals, and the controversial 2021 Aeroton drug bust.
His legal representative refused to speak to the media at the hospital, while his family has called for law enforcement to bring the alleged attackers to book.
In May, Khan was arrested alongside two other accused. The matter, which is being heard at the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court, relates to an alleged precious metal syndicate.
Khan and his co-accused were released on R20 000 bail each.
They face charges of corruption and the unlawful possession of precious metals.
