Tottenham Hotspur are growing increasingly confident of completing a blockbuster deal to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali this week, following a significant breakthrough in negotiations. According to Sportmediaset, the North Londoners have finalised an agreement on personal terms with the 26-year-old. Keen to secure a move away from St James’ Park this summer, Tonali has agreed to a lucrative six-year contract to join Roberto De Zerbi at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, worth €12 million (£10.1 million) per season – the highest of any Spurs player in history. Despite securing Tonali’s desire to move to N17, Tottenham must still overcome the final hurdle of reaching a club-to-club agreement with Newcastle. A small valuation gap remains between the two Premier League sides, with the Magpies holding firm on a £100m asking price for their prized midfielder.
Nevertheless, optimism remains high in the Tottenham camp. Backed by a fresh £100m equity injection from the Lewis family trust via ENIC Holdings, Spurs have the immediate liquidity required to bridge the remaining financial gap and break their club transfer record. De Zerbi has earmarked his compatriot as a top target. With personal terms secured and ongoing discussions over the final structure of a deal with Newcastle, Tottenham expect to reach a full agreement in the coming days. Tottenham’s pursuit of Tonali has been boosted by Arsenal’s decision to withdraw from the race for the midfielder and focus on Bruno Guimaraes instead. Newcastle would ideally like to keep both players but are resigned to losing at least one of their marquee midfielders this summer.
