The Malawi Diaspora Humanitarian Support Initiative has called on the South African government to declare the current situation for migrants in the country a disaster.
The organisation has been assisting Malawian nationals who want to go back home with food, buses and blankets. It says close to a thousand Malawians arrived at their Consulate General in Sandton on Friday, seeking assistance to go back home.
The coordinator of the Initiative Phaskani Msiska says they have innocent people who crossed the border to seek for a better living.
“Now they are being chased away and stoned like dogs, they have died in their homes, they are killed even when going back home.”
