Sky’s Kamila Cardoso sets WNBA record shooting 13-for-13, Chicago dishes out 38 assists to set league mark

At first glance, Friday’s WNBA matchup between the league’s third-worst and fourth-worst teams might not have provided much worth mentioning.

However, the Chicago Sky’s 124-94 win over the Portland Fire included two WNBA records and one Sky franchise high.

Sky center Kamila Cardoso set a league record for most shots taken without a miss, going 13-for-13 with 30 points and 8 rebounds. She surpassed the previous mark set by Nneka Ogwumike, who went 12-for-12 in the Los Angeles Sparks’ 97-73 win over the Dallas Wings on June 11, 2016.

Cardoso scored her final basket of the game in the third quarter with four minutes remaining. Perhaps intent on her keeping the record, she did not take another shot for the rest of the game while playing 24 minutes in total.

Sydney Taylor nearly matched Cardoso with 29 points for the Sky. Bridget Carlton led the Fire with 20 points, followed by 18 from Carla Leite.

The Sky also set a WNBA record for most assists in a game with 38. The previous mark of 37 was set against the Sky by the Seattle Storm in their 111-100 victory on Aug. 9, 2022.

Perhaps surprisingly, no Sky player reached double figures in assists on Friday, though Skylar Diggins came close with 9. Courtney Vandersloot followed with 7 assists. Vandersloot also made the record-setting assist, finding Gabriela Jaquez on a fast-break layup with 1:10 left in the game.

Additionally, Chicago set two franchise records in Friday’s win. Their 124 points were the most scored for a single game in team history, surpassing the previous high mark of 115 set in a win over the Indiana Fever on Aug. 18, 2018. However, the Sky needed double overtime to reach that total.

The Sky also shot 66.2% from the floor for another team-best mark. That included going 15-for-28 (54%) on 3-pointers.

With the win, Chicago improved to 6-12 for the season, the fourth-worst record in the WNBA. The Fire dropped to 8-11, but stays ahead of the Sky for the fifth-worst mark in the standings.

Chicago won all three of its matchups with Portland this season. Up next for the Sky is a home-and-home series with the Las Vegas Aces (13-5), beginning on Sunday. The Fire visit the Washington Mystics (8-9), also on Sunday.
