The father of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana defender, Khuliso Mudau, Peter Mudau, says his son’s meteoric rise to the international football stage makes him proud.
Mudau is one the most capped players in the current Bafana Bafana team that’s participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

Emerging from the dusty streets of Musina in Limpopo, Mudau has become one of the most dependable right-back in the Bafana squad. Colloquially known as “Sailorman”, Mudau started his professional career at the now-defunct JDR Stars over 10 years ago.
The speedy full-back had a brief stint at the recently-relegated Magesi FC in 2016. His consistent impressive displays at Black Leopards paved the way for a lucrative move to big spenders Mamelodi Sundowns in 2020.
Mudau earned his first cap for Bafana Bafana in 2020 and from there he never looked back. His father says Mudau has become the pride of his family and the community of Musina.
“As a father I feel proud that he is representing us. We have been motivating him to keep consistency towards what he is doing, to focus and to work hard because the position that he is having at Sundowns the right back, each and every team in South Africa they have got the right backs and most of the players they want to see themselves progressing up to the stage of Sundowns. So it means they want to get his position,” says Mudau.
Peter Mudau said he had a frank talk with his son after making it to Hugo Broos’ final 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA Word Cup.
“We encouraged him to work hard to maintain the consistency and we are very proud that he is not only part of team on the bench he is participating he is contributing,” says Mudau.
Mudau has issued a word of encouragement to Bafana Bafana players ahead of their last 32 clash with Canada on Sunday. Bafana could add another memorable layer to their history if the win against the Les Rouges.
“Already they have set a history by progressing to the next stage. So we encourage them to keep working harder and to push to the next stage up until the final. Our wish for them is to reach the final,” adds Mudau.
The game will kick start at 21:00 South African time at Los Angeles Stadium, USA.
