The top two teams in Group I of the FIFA World Cup will be in action on Friday, June 26 at Boston Stadium (3 p.m. start) when France and Norway meet in the final opening round game of the men’s soccer tournament.
Both teams have a record of 2-0 entering the final contest before the knockout round begins. France holds first place in the Group with a goal differential of +5 to Norway’s +4.
The knockout portion of the soccer tournament for the remaining field of 32 teams begins June 28 and runs until the championship final on Sunday, July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.
France will play Friday’s game without its head coach Didier Deschamps, who returned home after the death of his mother. Deschamps has coached France in the last two World Cup competitions, including a runner-up finish in 2022 when they lost to Argentina in a shootout.
Both teams have had one player step out as the hottest scorer of the tournament. Global soccer star Kylian Mbappé has been on fire, scoring four of France’s six goals. Erling Haaland has matched Mbappé step for step with four goals in Norway’s two games.

Norway and France be playing on Friday, June 26 at 3 p.m. in what FIFA has dubbed Boston Stadium. Boston Stadium is known locally as Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA, which is about 30 miles outside of Boston. The stadium is actually slightly closer to Providence, RI.

Gillette Stadium has a capacity of 64,628, which includes 92 luxury suites and over 5,000 club suites.
It’s smaller than many of the other 16 stadiums being used for the World Cup Games. MetLife Stadium in New Jersey has a capacity of 82,500. According to FIFA, Mexico City has a capacity of about 80,000 for the World Cup games.
