The New York Mets fired manager Carlos Mendoza on Friday, becoming the third MLB team to dismiss their leader this season.
The Boston Red Soxfired Alex Cora in late April following a 10-17 start to the year and the Philadelphia Phillies let go of Rob Thomson after they began the campaign 9-19.
With the Mets underperforming all season, Cora was a popular name to replace Mendoza after the former departed Boston and now, the 50-year-old former MLB infielder is again being linked to the position.
“Have to think the Mets will be very aggressive in trying to hire former Met Alex Cora,” Red Sox insider Peter Abraham of The Boston Globe posted on Bluesky. “Mets senior adviser Carlos Beltrán, who is tight with Cora, could be interested in the job. But NYC is a tough spot for a rookie manager. Cora has succeeded in a big market, has a ring, and knows how to handle star players, the media, etc. Maybe not now, but for the start of ’27.”
Andy Green has taken over as interim manager in Queens after previously managing the San Diego Padres from 2016 to 2019.
Cora was also heavily linked to the post in Philadelphia when Thomson was fired, though interim manager Don Mattingly has led the Phillies to a massive turnaround since taking over.
The Phillies have gone 36-17 under Mattingly and are atop the National League wild card standings at 45-36.
