The Freehold Township Little League president has been charged with stealing more than $73,000 from the organization since 2022, said Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago.
Donald Petito, 42, of Freehold, was charged with third-degree theft by unlawful taking or disposition on June 18, the statement read. He awaits further proceedings in the state Superior Court in Freehold, according to a statement from the Prosecutor’s Office.
After receiving a tip through Monmouth County Crime Stoppers, the Prosecutor’s Office launched an investigation, Santiago said in a statement.
The investigation revealed that starting in March 2022, Petito began to make reimbursement requests from the local little league organization for purchases that were either nonexistent or in which he inflated the amounts to be reimbursed, according to Santiago’s statement.
Investigators also determined that Petito had stolen funds from the league’s Venmo account. He transferred money to his own personal Venmo account, and then to a business account he directly controlled, the statement said.
Assistant Prosecutor Kristen Anastos has been assigned to the case.
