Thousands of South Korean soccer fans gathered in Seoul’s Gwanghwamun square on Thursday morning to watch their national team take on South Africa at the 2026 World Cup.
Cheers turned to groans as South Korea laboured to create chances, and a hush fell over the square when South Africa scored in the second half.
“I can’t believe today’s result (of losing). I came here really excited hearing people saying there was a high possibility of us winning, but now I have to go back to work in the afternoon feeling down,” 27-year-old soccer fan, Lee Gyeong-hee said after the match.
South Korea still have a chance to advance in the event as one of the best third-place teams, but they will need other results to go their way.
