Parliament Portfolio Committee on Higher Education has conducted an unannounced oversight visit to the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) offices in Cape Town amid ongoing concerns over student accommodation, allowance disbursements, and the administration of student funding.
The committee also sought updates on NSFAS operational systems and interventions to address persistent complaints from students regarding delayed payments and accommodation challenges.

“Look, I think the first thing is that the unannounced visits are important. They are good because we got in there and found people working. It’s not like they were working because we were coming. I think that’s the first thing. But the second thing is that we then interacted with the people there, some of them working extremely hard. I think we really appreciate the workers there who put so much into that institution,” says Committee Chairperson, Tebogo Letsei.
He says they did have a conversation with the advisors to the administrators.
“You could tell that they know what they’re talking about, which is very good,” he adds.
