The Chicago Cubs jumped the trade deadline by more than a month on June 24, acquiring left-handed starter David Peterson from the New York Mets.
The trade, however timely, was less about improving their own chances for contention at the expense of a last-place team, and more about getting through the season.
The Cubs placed two starting pitchers — Edward Cabrera and Ben Brown — on the 15-day injured list in the last two days. They needed someone beyond Vince Velasquez, who was summoned from Triple-A earlier in the day. Peterson, whose role in the Mets’ pitching plans had dwindled, fit the bill.
Jeff Passan of ESPN was first to report the trade.
Peterson has a 6.09 ERA this season, but his 3.85 FIP suggests better things could be in store for him as his luck evens out.
