African National Congress (ANC) Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has supported party President Cyril Ramaphosa’s move to interdict the work of Parliament’s Impeachment Committee.
Speaking to journalists at Luthuli House today, Mbalula said that the party is concerned with Parliament following proper processes rather than being motivated by the merits of the case.
“The foundational report on which this process rests is itself the subject of review before the court to be heard in September. Our considered view is that it cannot be sound for Parliament to charge ahead with a full inquiry on a foundation that a competent court may yet set aside. When that very court insists with assisting Parliament to settle the base record from which it must work, it is better to allow another competent forum to do its work so that parliament proceeds once properly and on solid ground rather than twice wastefully and on contested ground.”
The president has also filed a review application of the Section 89 Independent Panel Report that found he had a prima facie case to answer over the Phala Phala matter.
ON PARLIAMENTARY AND LEGAL MATTERS:
1️⃣ The ANC’s position on the Section 89 process is guided by one principle: Parliament must carry out its work lawfully, efficiently and on a sound legal foundation, while respecting the independence of the Speaker and the courts.
