Demonstrations are planned across the country for undocumented migrants to leave South Africa.
Acting Police Commissioner Puleng Dimpane made the announcement at a joint media briefing with members of private security in Centurion, Pretoria.
She says they have learned their lesson from the July 2021 unrest and are using joint intelligence and resources to ensure that history never repeats itself.
“I want to assure all South Africans that the South African Police Service is working closely with other law enforcement agencies and private security and we are fully prepared for the planned demonstrations on 30 June. Extensive planning has been undertaken at a national level, at provincial level as well as at local levels. Operational plans have been finalised.”
Civil groups pledge peace
Meanwhile, civil groups including March and March have confirmed that the demonstrations will be peaceful.
The groups briefed the media in Johannesburg.
Musa Hlongwa from United South Africans emphasised that there will be no violence taking place on the day of protest.
“We are not calling for violence but for government and the business sector to respect the law. It is that simple. No one will be violated, no one will be killed on the 30th of June, and no looting. I repeat, no one will be violated, no one will be killed on the 30th of June, and no looting will take place in our name.”
