KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thami Ntuli says that the number of foreign nationals requesting repatriation is growing daily.
This comes as the provincial government, together with other national departments have been processing immigrants and putting them on buses back to their countries.
More than 8 000 Malawian nationals have been processed by the Home Affairs Department, with 22 buses having left South Africa.
Ntuli says that some of the people coming to different sites are believed to be coming from outside the province.
“Each day, there are new people coming, despite the fact that we’re discouraging them to come into that condemned site but because of seeing transport opportunity, they’re coming there. Even those who really have ways and means to travel on their own, use this opportunity, which is quite very unfortunate. And in Durban, the site is a similar challenge that is in Pietermaritzburg, wherein people are transported, and more are coming on site but the work is continuing.”
