Brighton & Hove Albion are working on a deal to sign midfielder Lia Walti from Juventus in a move which would mark her return to the Women’s Super League.
The 33-year-old has undertaken a medical and although the deal is not yet finalised, negotiations between the clubs continue to progress positively.
Walti was keen to return to England and Juventus were open to finding a solution despite only signing her from Arsenal on a two-year contract last September.
Under head coach Massimiliano Canzi, Walti won the Supercoppa Italiana and the maiden Serie A Women’s Cup but Juventus failed to defend their league title, finishing third.
The midfielder is best known for her seven years at Arsenal, winning the Women’s Super League and Women’s Champions League during her time in north London.
Although she formed a long-standing partnership with Kim Little, her role diminished following the arrival of Mariona Caldentey in the summer of 2024, with the Spain international often operating in a deeper midfield position.
Upon announcing her departure from Arsenal Walti described it as “one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to take in my life”.
Walti would bring significant experience and leadership to Dario Vidosic’s side. The Switzerland captain with over 120 international caps is a natural leader on and off the pitch in terms of football intelligence and nurturing younger players.
The move would represent another statement of intent from Brighton as they look to establish themselves among the WSL’s leading clubs after reaching the FA Cup final for the first time last season. The club recently unveiled plans for a purpose-built women’s stadium which would be the first of its kind in Europe.
Walti would become Brighton’s first signing of the summer. Meanwhile, Sweden international Rosa Kafaji has returned to Arsenal following the end of her loan spell, while goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley and midfielder Libby Bance will leave the club when their contracts expire this month.
