Witness K, an inspector at the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), has testified before the Madlanga Commission that she feels “used”.
This is after discovering that the precious stones stolen from Killarney, Johannesburg, were estimated at R15 million.
Witness K, who is giving evidence in camera, is testifying about the theft of the stones which occurred in 2023. Witness K has testified that the agreed value for the stones was R110 000, adding that she kept R22 000 for herself.
The theft involved Ekurhuleni Metro Police Officials (EMPD) Keisha Lee-Stols and Norman McKenzie. Witness K has alleged that suspended EMPD Deputy Police Chief, Julius Mkhwanazi coordinated the theft.
“I admit I followed up the information with the lack of knowledge as well from my side because I couldn’t tell even those boxes that were set on the table what was the value for them at the time. How do we negotiate or how do we finalise everything after he got what he wanted from us? So, seeing this so much, yeah, I don’t know if I should say, I was used.”
The precious stones were allegedly stolen from an apartment in Killarney, in 2023 after a man later identified as Jelu Semon informed Witness K about them.
