Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) analyst testifying at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry, “Witness J”, has alleged that informer Tumelo Nku is involved in drug trafficking and has individuals assisting him to facilitate the trafficking of drugs.
Witness J testified before the commission last week, behind closed doors, in connection with cellphone data extracted from Nku’s cellphone.
Nku was one of four individuals, alongside three police officials, who were arrested for allegedly trying to steal the Aeroton drugs, which were seized in Johannesburg in 2021.
Witness J says Nku is not an informer, as he claims, because if that were the case, the Aeroton drug seizure would have taken place in Durban.
He also alleged that Nku had connections within the African National Congress (ANC) structures in the Eastern Cape, as he had previously sponsored individuals for the January 8 celebrations.
Cellphone data extracted from Nku’s cellphone revealed images, messages and contact numbers allegedly linking him to the shipment of containers.
The inquiry released the redacted transcript of Witness J’s testimony.
Witness J testified that encrypted messages from Nku’s messaging application, Threema, included chats referring to containers, truckers, customs officials and “stuff” inside the containers.
According to Witness J, the term “stuff” normally refers to drugs, based on his experience in law enforcement.
