Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has called on religious leaders, civil society, community-based organisation and trade union leaders to speak out against threats of destabilisation of the country over the issue of undocumented immigrants,
He says law enforcement agencies are prepared for any eventuality ahead of planned protest action on the 30th of June.
Speaking at the Cape Town Central Police Station following a visit to Nyanga, Cachalia says while the constitution protects the right to peaceful protest, there is no constitutional right to violence, intimidation or criminality.
“So, we had an interesting meeting in Nyanga and then one of the community representatives said to me spontaneously Minister you don’t have to worry about June the 30th because here in Nyanga we are not going to tolerate lawlessness, we are not going to tolerate efforts to destroy our infrastructure that speaks to a deep sense of community responsibility and solidarity.”
