Some records feel untouchable. For years, the WNBA’s all-time blocks mark looked like one of them. On Monday evening, Brittney Griner made sure her name now sits alone at the top of that list. The Connecticut Sun center officially became the WNBA’s all-time leader in blocked shots, recording her 878th career block and passing the previous record holder in the process. The milestone was announced during Connecticut’s game against the Chicago Sky, adding another remarkable achievement to one of the most decorated careers women’s basketball has ever seen.
Yahoo Sports celebrated the moment with a simple message:
“BRITTNEY GRINER IS NOW THE WNBA’S ALL-TIME BLOCKS LEADER.”
And honestly, that says it all.
A record that perfectly fits Griner’s career
When basketball fans think of Griner, they think of dominance around the rim.

From her days at Baylor to her long run with the Phoenix Mercury and now the Sun, Griner has spent more than a decade turning layups into regrets. The numbers are staggering.
Griner entered the league as the No. 1 overall pick in 2013 and immediately became one of the sport’s premier defensive players. She led the WNBA in blocks eight different times and owns the league record for blocks per game in a season at 4.0, set in 2015. Now she’s added perhaps the most impressive defensive accomplishment of them all.
Still making history at 35
What’s remarkable about this achievement is that it isn’t coming at the end of Griner’s career. She’s still producing at a high level.
Entering Monday’s game, the 35-year-old was averaging 12.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game for Connecticut. Against Chicago, she wasted little time stuffing the stat sheet once again, posting 12 points, six rebounds and four blocks through the first three quarters. Even on a struggling Sun team that entered the day with just two wins, Griner continues to show why she’s one of the most impactful defensive players the league has ever seen.
A resume built for Springfield
The blocks record is only the latest addition to a career résumé that already screams Hall of Fame. Griner is a WNBA champion, a 10-time All-Star, a two-time WNBA Defensive Player of the Year, an eight-time blocks leader and a three-time Olympic gold medalist. She also remains one of the most recognizable figures in women’s basketball worldwide.
The record feels especially fitting because shot-blocking has been Griner’s signature skill from the moment she stepped onto a professional court.
Players score points. Great players win games. Legends change record books.
On Monday, Brittney Griner did exactly that, becoming the most prolific shot-blocker the WNBA has ever seen.
The number isn’t stopping at 878
The scary part for opposing offenses? Griner isn’t done. The new record stands at 878 blocks and counting. Every game from here on out simply adds to a mark that may take years, or even decades, for another player to challenge.
For now, the title belongs to Brittney Griner alone.
