U.S. women’s national team icon Abby Wambcach declared that “Our World Cup Overfloweth” in an Instagram post published on June 21.
In a conversation with her partner, Glennon Doyle, recorded during the eventual 2-2 draw between Cape Verde and Uruguay, Wambach says that the country is “of joy” as a result of the tournament.
“I just cannot believe what a relief this tournament has given me, in terms of what has gone on in the world over the past couple of years,” Wambach said. “Sports can freaking heal things. Let this continue on.”
The arrival of fans from around the world has resulted in a slate of cross-cultural exchanges that has ranged from the humorous, the poignant, to the almost overwhelming. The tournament has also provided a slate of World Cup breakthrough goals, points and wins for countries not commonly associated with success on soccer’s biggest stage.
A dream start from the U.S. men’s side has also lifted the mood of the nation, with the Americans securing the pole position from Group D at the close of the group’s second set of matches.
Some pundits, namely Fox commentator and former Swedish international and Galaxy star Zlatan Ibrahimovic, have said that the U.S. could win the tournament it is co-hosting. However, former U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard has cautioned the home fans to temper expectations as the level of competition ramps up.
