The Chairperson of Parliament’s Impeachment Committee, Makashule Gana, says he has formally filed opposing papers against President Cyril Ramaphosa’s court bid to halt the committee’s work. Gana has filed papers in the Western Cape High Court after National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza decided not to oppose Ramaphosa’s urgent interdict application.
The President is seeking to interdict the committee, which was established to consider matters relating to a possible impeachment process over the Phala Phala matter.
Gana says the committee has now entered the legal battle and remains committed to continuing its work while the matter is before the courts.
“ I confirm that, today, Monday the 22nd of June I have filed on behalf of the impeachment committee an affidavit, opposing the urgent application by President Ramaphosa to interdict the work of the committee. So, I have filed that affidavit in opposition on behalf of the committee. The committee is continuing with its work. On Wednesday, the 24th of June, the committee will meet where we’ll discuss and consider the draft terms of reference and also the process of appointing the evidence leaders.”
Meanwhile, National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza says she wants to dispel any notion that she is toeing the party line by resorting to abide by the outcome of the Western Cape High Court in President Ramaphosa’s urgent interdict application.
“ And looking at my own situation, and having done what I needed to do, emanating from the court, I felt it was important to abide and be guided by the court, having given them, an explanatory affidavit of what Parliament has done, in ensuring the courts judgement, particularly the ConCourt’s judgement, on the Section 89 report is carried out.”
