The Toronto Blue Jays are making changes to their MLB roster, this time giving a former elite prospect another opportunity at the major league level. Toronto announced Monday that it has selected the contract of infielder Luis Urías, just days after acquiring him from the Arizona Diamondbacks organization. To make room on the active roster, the club optioned outfielder Yohendrick Piñango to Triple-A Buffalo.

Urías Earns Another MLB Opportunity
While Urías may not carry the same prospect hype he once did, his journey back to the majors has been fueled by an impressive stretch at Triple-A Reno.
The 28-year-old was hitting a remarkable .361/.393/.546 prior to the promotion. Those numbers certainly stand out, although some evaluators will point to his .367 batting average on balls in play as a sign that some regression could be coming.
Regardless, the Blue Jays clearly liked what they saw. Toronto’s front office has been searching for additional infield depth and offensive production, and Urías provides both experience and versatility as the club prepares for an important series against the Houston Astros.
From Elite Prospect to Baseball Journeyman
There was a time when Urías was viewed as one of the brightest young talents in baseball. During his days in the San Diego Padres system, he was considered a top-20 prospect in all of Major League Baseball. Expectations were sky-high as he worked his way through the minors.
After being traded to the Milwaukee Brewers, Urías enjoyed the most productive stretch of his major league career and appeared poised to become a long-term fixture in an everyday lineup. Things haven’t gone quite as planned since then. The infielder has spent recent years bouncing between organizations before landing with Arizona on a minor league contract.
Fresh Start in Toronto
Now, Urías gets another chance to prove he belongs. For the Blue Jays, this is a relatively low-risk move with potentially meaningful upside. If his strong Triple-A production translates to the major league level, Toronto could find itself with a valuable contributor as the season moves deeper into the summer.
At the very least, the former top prospect has earned another opportunity to show he still has something left to offer.
