The South African government has vowed to continue with efforts to maintain strong diplomatic ties with its African counterparts, as the country accelerates the repatriation of displaced undocumented Malawian nationals amid growing tensions over immigration.
South Africa has faced a backlash on the diplomatic front from a number of countries whose citizens have been affected by the protests against undocumented foreign nationals in the country.
International Relations Deputy Minister Thandi Moraka says they are engaging other African countries on measures to regularise migration.
“And we’re doing everything in our power to make it a point that we utilise our engagements with those respective countries at the level of SADC, in the AU as well, to say let us work together and address issues of original economic integration because migration is a global phenomenon. People always move from one country to another. What is important is the whole issue of how we then work together with all the member states to regularise the movement of our people from one country to another.”
About 5000 Malawian nationals have now been repatriated or deported to Malawi.
