And just like that, Michigan State basketball is back, sort of. Summer training camp for the Spartans is now underway, and MSU hosted a public scrimmage this week that showed off some new names and faces like Anton Bonke and Carlos Medlock.
A few things I noticed in the highlights, which we posted below:
- Carlos Medlock Jr. looks like an absolute stud. Medlock navigated screens and popped out for multiple nice-looking jumpers, and even blew by Jeremy Fears Jr. for an impressive layup. You don’t want to overreact to one clip, but expect him to play a role this year, finally giving Fears the backup point guard this team has needed for years, and then some.
- It’s great to see Kaleb Glenn healthy. They took their time with his rehab, and it looks like it’s about to pay off. He looks great.
- I liked to see Coen Carr being assertive with the ball and driving to the basket. He’s at his best as a secondary ball handler, using his strength and athleticism to get to the basket.
- This is no knock on him, and this was kind of expected, but don’t be surprised if prized recruit Ethan Taylor takes a redshirt this year. Even in a short clip, you can see that his defense needs some work, but that’s as expected.
- It’s a little eerie to see Anton Bonke in the Carson Cooper role that MSU has always loved out of their centers, passing out of the center of the three-point line. Bonke should be able to add some dynamism to that position, since he is expected to be able to stretch the floor this year and shoot it.
