The Baltimore Orioles are six games below .500 but are still very much alive in the postseason race.
To get there, they’ll need at least one upgrade in the starting rotation.
Trevor Rogers has not carried over his success from last season, and Shane Baz has been somewhat of a disappointment after signing a five-year, $68 million extension.
One trade partner the Orioles can negotiate with is the San Francisco Giants, Bleacher Report’s Zachary D. Rymer wrote Wednesday.
A report from ESPN’s Buster Olney indicates the struggling Giants will be open for business at the trade deadline.
One Giants pitcher the Orioles could consider? Left-hander and former AL Cy Young Award winner Robbie Ray.
“Robbie Ray is a guy they can get without giving up too much. He’d bring some gravitas to the top of their rotation, as he’s still more of an ace type than his ERA indicates,” Rymer wrote. “About 40 percent of his earned runs can be traced back to two starts.”
Ray has the track record of an All-Star pitcher and still has decent strikeout stuff, averaging 8.1 punchouts per nine innings in 14 starts. As Rymer detailed, his 4.42 ERA is elevated due to two poor outings in which he allowed nine and five runs, respectively.
Otherwise, Ray has permitted two or fewer runs in eight of his appearances on the mound.

Baltimore could use another veteran arm, and Ray has at least some postseason experience, throwing 13.1 innings across six appearances.
He may not be the best name available on the trade market, but he will surely cost a lot less than Tarik Skubal or Joe Ryan.
