Hawks KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commander, Campbell Nyuswa, has conceded that proper procedures were not followed in storing the cocaine at the Hawks’ offices in Port Shepstone.
Nyuswa is currently testifying at the Madlanga Commission.
He was the police officer who instructed that the R200 million cocaine consignment be stored at the Hawks offices in Port Shepstone.
Nyuswa testified that the illegal drug consignment was not recorded in the South African Police Service register at the Port Shepstone Police Station but was stored at Hawks’ premises.
Nyuswa conceded to Commissioner Sandile Khumalo that proper procedures and the chain of custody were not followed in storing the drug consignment.
Commissioner Sandile Khumalo: So, your reasoning that, although the proper chain of custody was not preserved, because Mpangase was in control throughout, you were happy that at least he knew where they were. Because that seems to be your suggestion, or your line of reasoning, that because he knows where they are, then they were not compromised?
Nyuswa: That’s correct.
