Former New York Giants wide receiver Ed McCaffrey played a critical role on New York’s offense in the early 1990s despite spending just the first three seasons of his career with the team.
McCaffrey was originally the Giants’ third-round selection in the 1991 NFL draft. The route runner went on to have an excellent career in the NFL after his time in New York, winning three Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers and the Denver Broncos across his 13-year career.
The former Giant was asked for his thoughts on newly hired head coach John Harbaugh. McCaffrey believes New York hired the perfect candidate for the job.
“I know the candle kind of burned out in Baltimore, but coach Harbaugh has been a winner his entire coaching career,” he told Kyle Odegard in a recent interview. “He’s going to be able to navigate those waters and figure out how to turn that team around. I do believe that. And I think he has a lot of talent on that roster.
“I do believe they have the right coach, and I do believe he will find a way to put his players in a position to have success. It’ll be Year 1, and there are always challenges in your first year with a team, but I do think they have talent on the roster and I do think he’s the right man for the job.”
McCaffrey recorded 1,091 yards and seven touchdowns throughout his three seasons with the Giants. The former wide receiver appears fully confident in Harbaugh’s abilities this season, and many would agree with his assessment of the legendary head coach.
Harbaugh will enter his first season as the Giants’ head coach with major expectations. The long-time Baltimore Ravens head coach has been widely regarded as one of the top coaches in football over the past decade, and he now finds himself with a plethora of young talent on both sides of the ball.
McCaffrey’s thoughts on Harbaugh could prove prescient as the 2026 campaign kicks off in September.
