The Senzo Meyiwa murder trial has been postponed until Friday in the High Court in Pretoria. The aim of the postponement is to give a defence witness time to get advice on the legal consequences of refusing to testify.
This is after Qiniselani Buthelezi, an inmate at a prison in KwaZulu-Natal, said he no longer wished to continue giving evidence.
Buthelezi, who started testifying on Friday last week, says he is uncomfortable with a statement being read in court, maintaining that investigator Bongani Gininda wrote it.
Presiding Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng says the witness must understand the implications of refusing to testify.
Judge: So, this court is going to adjourn. When is the recess?
Interpreter: Friday is the last day, my Lord. Coming back on the 20th.
Judge: Okay, this court is going to adjourn until Friday to enable you to obtain that legal advice, as to what the consequences are of a witness who takes an oath to tell the truth, nothing but the truth and a witness who is aware of the gravity of this case, which is a charge of the murder.
