The Gauteng Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety, alongside Gun Free South Africa, will launch the Gun Free Gauteng Campaign on Saturday at the Jeppe police station in Johannesburg.
The campaign aims to combat rising gun violence and the proliferation of illegal firearms across the province.
The initiative comes amid growing safety concerns following this week’s mass shooting incident in Cleveland, Johannesburg.
Twelve people were killed and 15 others injured.
The Portfolio Committee says the increasing number of illegal firearms in the hands of criminals is fueling violence and leaving many communities traumatised.
The Gun Free Gauteng Campaign aims to bring together communities, law enforcement and government to reduce gun violence and promote safer communities across the province.
