The Yena family in Sidwadweni village in Tsolo in the Eastern Cape has described as negligent the management of the creche where their one-year and three-month-old girl was found dead inside a pit toilet.
The incident took place on Thursday afternoon. It is alleged the toddler was spotted by a three-year-old walking towards the pit latrine.
The distraught mother of the child, Yolisa Yena, says the teachers did not even bother to call her. She says the incident has left her and her family with more questions than answers.
“This is very painful. They were very negligent. Even after we left the clinic, the teachers did not even come to us here at home. They did not even bother to call me to let me know about my child. They should have called me when they called the vehicle to rush my child to the clinic. I only heard about this from a parent who was rushing my child to the clinic.”
Police have opened an inquest docket.
Teachers at the centre have also expressed shock.
Principal, Kolunga Bingwa, has sent condolences to the bereaved family.
“The child was still alive at the time because she was still breathing. It’s when we took her clothes off and made her lie on her back that I could see we were losing her. We are very hurt as the school. Before I am a principal here, I am also a parent. My child is also here and I wouldn’t feel good if this happened to my child. So, we sympathize with the family.”
