The Madlanga Commission in Pretoria has put it to Gauteng Traffic Police Chief Samuel Mashaba that he may be part of a criminal network involving alleged police informant Itumeleng Nku.
Mashaba, who has spent more than two days on the witness stand, has now concluded his testimony before the Commission.
Evidence has revealed that Mashaba, who allegedly had limited experience in drug-related operations, did not follow the relevant police prescripts in processing the 2021 Aeroton drug scene, south of Johannesburg, where more than 700 kilogrammes of cocaine was seized.
Commissioner Sesi Baloyi elaborates, “I put to you for your comment, that the appearances here are you part of a criminal network. And you may possibly still be part of a criminal network that is involved in off the books, in fact, let me not call it off the books sub-operations, because it’s a CPT sub-operations.”
“You are involved in unlawful activities, you personally, with Mr Nkwu, who from the WhatsApp messages that we have seen, is involved in activities that involve drug trafficking.”
The Madlanga Commission resumes on Wednesday next week.
