From Monday next week, government employees will be required to verify their identity and employment details online using QR codes linked to their pay slips.
The process will run for two months with departments expected to help workers who may need assistance.
KZN Treasury spokesperson Nkosikhona Duma says any irregularities uncovered during the exercise will face further investigation.
“The verification of payroll recipients reinforces accountability, improves the integrity of employee data and ensures that public funds are used responsibly. MEC Francois Rodgers adds that this supports government’s commitment to building a capable and ethical state whilst reducing the ever-growing salary bill in the country,” says Duma.
During his MTBPS last year, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced a ramp-up in efforts to root out thousands of so-called ‘ghost workers’ from the state payroll.
The move was cautiously welcomed by labour unions.
The Minister announced that National Treasury will work closely with the Department of Public Service Administration and Home Affairs on a data-driven approach that integrates systems across government.
