Jun. 11—JAMESTOWN — Braelyn Wiese is shooting to be one of the best golfers in North Dakota.
Judging by her performance at the Medora Girls Golf Camp and Rough Rider Girls Golf Classic, she is well on her way to accomplishing her goal.
Wiese, a sophomore at Jamestown High School, attended Medora’s girls golf camp and played in the Rough Rider Girls Golf Classic in Medora, North Dakota, June 6-8. She finished third overall in tournament play and also won the camp’s chipping competition. She qualified for the Drive, Chip and Putt finals held on June 8.
Wiese got started with golf at age 8.
“My grandma, Jan Wiese, bought me my first set of clubs and signed me up for a few golf lessons at Hillcrest Golf Course,” Wiese said. “What I enjoy most about golfing is the challenge. Every round is different, and there is always something to improve on. I also enjoy meeting new people, and this sport has opened up a lot of opportunities.
“There is a great community around the sport,” she said. “The more I played, the more I fell in love with the game. My long-term goal is to play golf in college. I have had wonderful support from my family and friends and would not be where I am today without them.”
Medora’s Rough Rider Girls Golf Classic is a part of the Dakota Junior Golf Association (DJGA). Wiese is a member of the DJGA.
“I will be partaking in some of the summer tournaments offered through their program in the upcoming months,” Wiese said. “When I go into tournaments, I try not to have too many expectations. My main focus is to try my best and have fun doing it. I participated in several six-week programs in Bismarck throughout the winter sponsored by DJGA and made great connections with other state golfers partaking in the Medora Girls Golf Camp.”
Medora offers the only PGA-qualified course in North Dakota.
“Medora’s Rough Rider Girls Golf Classic is the first tournament of the summer,” she said. “I have played at the Billy Pulpit course before, so (I) knew what to expect. The back 9 is very challenging given the terrain. It was very hot, and I did my best to stay hydrated and focused. I finished in third place out of about 123 girls. … I hit a lot of solid shots throughout the round and was able to put myself in good positions.”
Wiese’s ending score was a 45 in Medora.
“The best part of the Medora tournament was getting to play on such a unique course,” Wiese said. “You can’t beat the views. I would recommend others attend the Medora golf tournament because it is a great opportunity to challenge yourself, meet new people, and compete against other great golfers across the state.”
Wiese has been a member of the Jamestown High School varsity golf team since her eighth grade year. Wiese qualified to the NDHSAA State Golf Championships last season, finishing the two-day event with a score of 188. Wiese said one of her biggest strengths on the course is her long game.
“I trust my driver and irons, and when I’m hitting them well, it helps create a lot of scoring opportunities,” Wiese said. “I have improved my game since last golf season by participating in Dakota Junior Golf Association camps. I have just been hitting the course every chance and have received guidance from a family friend, Steve Sedler. He knows the game inside and out and has helped me improve my swing, course management, and overall confidence on the course.”
Next week. Wiese will be participating in a girls golf camp sponsored by Fargo Country Club.
“I have a few more tournaments planned this summer, and I will continue to practice as much as I can,” Wiese said.
The 2026 NDHSAA Girls Golf Season is set to begin in early August.
“My goal is to keep improving, gain more experience, and be ready for another successful high school golf season,” Wiese said.
