Serena Williams’ comeback to tennis might be over before it started. Following a successful first match back, Williams’ playing status is now in jeopardy after her doubles partner sustained an injury at the HSBC Championships on Wednesday.
Victoria Mboko was forced to retire from her singles match against Karolina Pliskova on Wednesday after the Canadian was injured in a fall.
The injury, and Mboko’s inability to finish Wednesday’s match, puts her and Williams’ HSBC Championships status in limbo. After the pair defeated Erin Routliffe and Nicole Melichar-Martinez on Tuesday, Mboko and Williams were slated to play again Thursday.
That match is now in question following Mboko’s injury.
