Residents of the Jumpers informal settlement in Cleveland, Johannesburg, have called for police visibility in their area.
The call comes after twelve people were killed and nine others wounded in a shooting incident in the area last night.
More than ten suspects are still at large.
The area’s councillor Thandiwe Mbambala says residents are not safe.
“We need safety around this area because this area is not safe at all. Our people are not safe. There is illegal mining happening here, there is a project that is happening here. So we don’t know exactly what happened, what triggered this to happened. Previously when this project started we lost one of our sisters here. They shot her.”
“I don’t know how to talk, I am nervous about this place. It’s not good at all the zama zama [illegal miners] going to kill us. I was at my house by 21:10 when the shooting starts [started]. We were hearing gunshots and then they shot my elder brother. He is at the hospital now they shot him in the tummy.”
