The KwaZulu-Natal Health Department is set to start distributing the HIV prevention drug Lenacapavir to 94 clinics in the province.
Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane says national government has identified clinics in seven districts – including eThekwini, Ugu, Umkhanyakude, and Zululand – to roll out the twice-yearly injectable drug.
She told the Health Portfolio Committee in the provincial legislature on Tuesday that they had so far received over 6 000 doses of their nearly 9 400 allocation.
“When we say as a country we are looking forward to a generation that is HIV/AIDS free this [HIV prevention drug] makes that possible. Because it means those that have not been infected are going to be getting the vaccine every year, twice a year. Of course, the vaccine doesn’t mean that all the other safety instruments are not utilised because we continue to say people must protect themselves, people must have one partner,” explains Simelane.-Reporting by Zanele Buthelezi
