Ben Stokes hails Ollie Robinson’s 7-wicket return to Test cricket after England’s win over NZ
England and New Zealand are playing some of the finest Test cricket in the ongoing Crowe-Thorpe Trophy. While England looked in control from their first innings, it was in New Zealand’s second innings that they truly sealed the deal with a commanding 115-run victory.
And while it was a team performance with everyone pulling their weight, one man was at the center of it all. Ollie Robinson. The 32-year-old last played a test match for England in February 2024 and has spent the next 24 months completely sidelined due to recurring injuries.
So when he was named in the squad for the Lord’s Test, everyone had high hopes for him. Robinson made sure to live up to each one as he scalped seven wickets while handing England the victory. His impact was so immediate that captain Ben Stokes personally called him Mr. Lord’s.
Ben Stokes had high praise for his teammate
In the post-match interview, Stokes didn’t shy away from mentioning just how important Robinson was for this victory. “Look, the skill that Ollie possesses is never being questioned, and I think that was very evident to see this week,” Stokes told the reporters.
The England captain praised Robinson’s relentless bowling and how it never looked like the bowler would miss. This was evident as he quickly dispatched both former NZ captain Kane Williamson and Rachin Ravindra for ducks before ending up with a 5-39 in the first innings.
“What an introduction back into the team… he’s Mr Lord’s!”

He then ended up with two more in the second innings to complete seven wickets. Stokes understands just how important these wickets are for his side’s win. “Once he gets over that white line, he’s a different person, and that’s what we want to see going forward from Ollie,” Stokes said.
“He’s a phenomenal bowler. He led the attack brilliantly this week, along with Gus (Atkinson). He’s just Mr. Lords, isn’t he? He just loves this place.” Stokes remains confident for the second match at The Oval.
But while Stokes was stoked for Robinson’s performance, the bowler himself had an emotional moment in the game.
Robinson was ecstatic to be back with the national side
The bowler called his performance a dream week. Speaking to the media post-match, he mentioned, “It’s been a dream week. Firstly, to win the test match and then to put up a winning performance to help the team. It’s a dream come true this week to play for England and get to win.”
“I’d enjoy taking this pitch around!”🤣

With this win in his pocket, Robinson would be looking to continue this run as he gets himself ready for the upcoming matches. The teams will have a break of more than a week, with the second Test match starting on June 17 at The Oval.
